There are many writers I read very closely, but J.M. While Shalini suffers a great deal of gendered violence, there are different forces creating her world. Atwood explores a gendered dystopia, something I would not presume to write. The consequences of her rebellion are appalling: her husband is murdered, and her daughter, Leila, kidnapped. Shalini, the novel’s narrator, is devoted to the city’s lost cosmopolitanism, and commits the ultimate crime of marrying a Muslim man. Leila, is set in a near-future Indian city, with elements of both Delhi and Mumbai, in which cosmopolitanism has yielded to an extreme form of tribalism in which people live in caste or religious ghettoes, and are forced to rigidly follow the rules of their community. Yolen’s crisp text captures the exuberant rhythm of the duo’s instant bond: the two (one who “rarely talked” and one who “always listened”) spend hours chatting “about nights and nightjars, about nests and nestlings, about hoots and calls, about feathers and wings.” In richly hued landscapes that showcase brilliant bird plumage, moonlight and shadow, and a multitude of evergreen and birch trees, Wilson portrays two birds of a feather finding each other. The boxes most widely sought after come from one of four small Russian villages - Palekh, Fedoskino, Kholui, and Mstera. Artists will typically use strong magnifying glasses on these spots and very fine brushes made out of a squirrel's tail. Lacquer artists must not only excel artistically, but must also have the patience to spend long stretches of time working on the many small intricate sections of their composition. The lacquer box sitting on your mantel today will likely be enjoyed by many generations.īut it's the miniature paintings that bring real value to the boxes. It can take as long as two months to make a box out of papier-mache, a material many artists prefer because of its ability to withstand changes in atmospheric conditions and to avoid cracking. The boxes, which vary in size, are extremely well crafted. Coats of clear lacquer, or varnish, are the last layers to be put on and provide a stunning shine to the box. They get their name from the many layers of lacquer (most often, black and red) that are applied to both their outside and inside sections. The boxes feature intricately hand-drawn miniature paintings based on a variety of themes, including fairy tales, poems, country life, troikas, landscapes, battle scenes, and old art masterpieces. Russian lacquer boxes are among the most beautiful and distinctive of that country's art achievements in the 20th century. There were so many poetic and beautiful lines of description that lent to the magic. Though this book is undoubtedly unique and stands on its own, it is like a fun mix of Outlander and the Legend of Zelda with a dash of Tolkien delivered in a YA way. Published in 1986, this book actually predates Outlander, but definitely bears some similarity with the idea of a young woman going back in time in a Celtic land. It took my imagination back to that of a child or preteen, when I lived fondly in my own head. I won't go into spoilery details, but I loved that this book was written in the "older style" YA that I grew up with. Still, I think it came to me at just the right time, when I'm needing to believe in creative magic the most. I wish I had read this book when I was younger, because it's something that most definitely would have made my childhood list. It wasn't until I was in the airport that I noticed it had been signed by the author. It was there I picked this book- kind of at random- because I thought it sounded interesting and I needed a new book for the plane home. I was in London for 10 days this past month, and I visited a little used book shop in a gorgeous park. |
